Total Ghana has marked World Malaria Day with several activities among Junior High School pupils in Kumasi. The programme has been running for the past ten years. Like the previous year’s exercise held in densely-populated Glefe in the Greater Accra Region, the Asem cluster of schools and its immediate environs in the Ashanti Region were the next to benefit on Wednesday, April 27, 2016.
Asem is a densely populated area in the Kumasi Metropolis. In all seven schools took part in the World Malaria Day celebrations represented by approximately 1,200 Junior High School pupils. The exercise was held in collaboration with medical personnel and metropolitan authorities in the Ashanti Region.
Several exciting activities including sketches, poetry recitals and rap competitions preceded the highlight of the event: a quiz competition to test the pupils’ acumen on Malaria which has killed millions globally. Every pupil went home with a treated mosquito bed net, insecticides as well as other attractive prizes.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education commended Total Ghana for taking the initiative to re-sensitise the pupils. According to him:
“This will rekindle their vigilance on preventing malaria and hopefully cut down on the rate of infant mortality resulting from the disease”.
Total Ghana, since the inception of World Malaria Day activities, has also distributed anti-malaria items such as treated mosquito bed nets and insecticide sprays to pregnant women and lactating mothers in various polyclinics across the country.
Employees of Total Ghana were not left out of the activities as a short sensitization exercise led by the Total Medical Director was held for management and staff at the head office in Accra on April 25, 2016. Similar exercises were also organised in the regions for area office staff to mark the day.
