The Ghana Meteorological Agency, (GMA), has warned of severe harmattan beginning next week and cautioned drivers to fix fog lights on their vehicles to avoid head on collision.

The most affected will ne mountainous areas such as the Akuapem Ridge, the Kwahu and Asante Mampong scarp where visibility will be extremely poor.

Kafui Quarshigah, Chief Meteorological Officer who disclosed this said the Motor Transport Traffic Department (MTTD) must deploy personnel on the highways to check excessive speeding to save lives during the harmattan.

Warning of the severe implications of the harmattan on the human body, he urged ladies to always apply lip gloss and shea butter to check dry lips and avoid cracked skin. In addition, people should use warm water to shower and avoid sleeping on the bare floor at night.

The Chief Meteorological Officer said the intensity of the harmattan this year,is likely to contribute to increase in the outbreak of meningitis in the Northern sector.

He stressed that as much as possible, overcrowding must be avoided while ventilation is improved. Mr. Quarshigah said temperatures are likely to drop thus there is the need for the young ones and the aged to wear warm clothing during the period.

He said there would be lot of dust in the air which could trigger acute respiratory problems and appealed to the public to cover their noses in dusty areas. Mr. Quarshigah cautioned their vendors to cover food items and urged people to avoid eating in the open.
