Captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he would prefer Ghana winning the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to Ghana qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup if he were to choose between the two.

This comes in the wake of Ghana’s all-time top scorer scoring his maiden goal of the season for Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League.

Speaking on Happy FM from his base in China, the Shanghai SIPG hit-man who returned from a nagging thigh injury to help his side trounced Liaoning Whowin 4-0, intimated that it was over three decades since Ghana last won the AFCON and it has been their utmost desire to break that jinx in the next tournament.

“If I’m to choose between winning the AFCON and the qualifying for the World Cup, I would prefer winning the AFCON than qualifying Ghana to play in the World.

“It’s been over 30 years since Ghana last won the trophy and it’s casting a big slur on our football image which we are bent on breaking.

“We have been to the World Cup on 3 occasion and there are several other countries who have been to the World Cup on countless occasions and are yet to win it. Such countries would also hope to win the upcoming World Cup. I am not saying Ghana cannot win the World Cup.” Asamoah Gyan said.

Gyan, 30, picked up a thigh injury while on international duty but recovered on time to help his side in their weekend’s game.
“I’m doing very fine now and I’ll only ask Ghanaians to keep praying for me so I stay fit and deliver the goods to them when it matters most.” Gyan added.
